Svalbard

In July 2011, I flew to Oslo and on up to Longyearbyen, on the island of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago in high Arctic Norway. There we boarded a Russian cruise ship, the Akademic Ioffe. For nine days we traveled around various parts of Svalbard, up to 80.45 degrees north. We saw five polar bears, minke whales, herds of walrus and a profusion of bird life. At that latitude, there is 24 hour daylight. There were about 150 passengers, divided between birders and photographers. There were also 35 Chinese high school students from the “Second High School attached to Beijing Normal University“. It was a fascinating trip and confirmed my interest in visiting Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands in the near future.2011 - Norway - 054
